CCA Envision Dance Conservatory at The Vine - Black Box Theatre
Dancers from the Canyon Crest AcademyEnvision Dance Conservatory performed Unbreakable Threads during the Summer 2012 Series at The Vine - Black Box Theatre at the Bernardo Winery on July 16th and 17th, 2012.
As the official photographer for at least one of the CCA dancers I was lucky enough to get time with all of them while they prepared for the weekend performance. During that time I had the opportunity to shoot the dancers as they staged their pieces in the Vine performance space which, while quite nice, is significantly smaller than their home studio and stage in the Proscenium Theatre at CCA.
Following tech rehearsal the dancers performed a complete run through of the show and during that performance I had the entire audience space to myself and was able to capture a variety of new angles for some of the pieces which I had seen before during school shows from the previous season at CCA.
Pieces in Unbreakable Threads were choreographed by CCA Envision Dance Conservatory dancers, by the CCA Envision Dance Program Artistic Director, Rayna Stohl and by CCA Envision Dance guest artist, Jessica Rabanzo-Flores.
In addition, Sophie Needelman, a past graduate of CCA and Envision Dance Conservatory alumna and founder of The Defiance Project danced in the show. Sophie performed her piece, entitled "We Don't Eat," a reprise of a piece from a previous performance by The Defiance Project during the Mojalet Dance Collective's Summer 2012 Series.
Spring Break 2012
Fire and Water I was taken on the first long exposure day of Spring Break 2012.
Shot in Goleta, CA while working on my pier series the 'fire' is light spilling from the lights on shore and the light near the horizon is from the nearly full moon. The selection of square format was intention from the start... I set my 7D to display 1x1 crop lines on my LCD so that I could frame with square crop in mind.
Ocean Beach Pier
Arriving at a pier for the first time in the dark you are a little bit unsure what will come from the session. The milkiness of the overcast sky and relatively quiet ocean can really be felt in these images. This is a very quiet location with only a handful of fishermen arriving before dark. After sunrise and the finish of the session there is a small coffee shop that opens in the plaza at the foot of the pier and breakfast for the ride home available across the street. I will definitely return to this location...
