This piece is the story of a mother who is diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and a daughter who doesn’t know how to handle the news. The daughter is trying to cope with the situation while, at the same time, help her mother through the pain. The mother was diagnosed and it was completely unexpected. Eventually, the cancer overpowered her strength when she was 32 years old and the daughter had to learn to be an eleven-year-old mother to her younger siblings.
In dedication to my mother, Maria Eugenia Arispe Gilbreth.
In loving memory of my grandmother, Maria Delores Arispe Polanco, 1943-1975.
